Welcome to my musical tribute, where in the West Flanders region of Belgium, I will be paying homage to the fallen British Commonwealth soldiers of the Great War by performing the poignant bugle call, “The Last Post,” at every Commonwealth Cemetery within the Ypres Salient. During WWI, Commonwealth policy stipulated that soldiers would be buried where they fell instead of being returned home. As a result of this policy many families worldwide are unable to visit their relative’s graves from this period. The intent of this project is to allow families of the fallen to hear and see the “Last Post” being performed at their relative’s cemeteries. I am honored to embark on this project which uses the power of music to connect with the past and honor the sacrifices made by those who gave their all for a better tomorrow. Each cemetery link will include the history of the cemetery and a photo from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website in addition to my video performance of the “Last Post” and “Reveille” performed on an authentic WWI British Bugle. It is my sincere hope that those unable to visit the graves of their relatives may find a sense of solace and closure knowing that these soldiers and their sacrifices are not forgotten.
This project is dedicated to my Father-In-Law, Bernard Boden, who has five distant British relatives who fought and died in WW1 and are named on memorials, or buried in Belgium and France.
